Antibiotics: Things You Should Know About It

Antibiotics are also called as antibacterials and are the medicines used to kill bacteria in a human body, or they slow down the growth of bacteria. There is a range of powerful medicines which are used to treat diseases caused due to bacteria. If someone has flu, cold, most of the coughs which are all caused due to viral infections cannot be treated using antibiotics.

Few points about antibiotics:

  • In 1928, penicillin, natural antibiotic, was discovered by Alexander Fleming.

  • Antibiotics cannot be used for killing the virus or slowing their growth.
  • Fleming also was the first who predicted about the resistance of antibiotic.
  • Antibiotics are used to kill bacteria or slow down their growth.
  • Few sides effects of antibiotics are diarrhea, nausea and stomach upset.

What are antibiotics?

Antibiotics are powerful drugs used to save people from certain infections if they are taken correctly. The stop reproducing of bacteria or they kill them. When bacteria attack someone, the immune system fights them and destroys them even before it shows any symptoms. White Blood Cells or WBC usually kills the infection and makes one cure even when the symptoms might show up. But there are instances when the immune system fails to kill them all, at that time antibiotics are used.

Penicillin was the first antibiotic, and there are antibiotics which are based on penicillin that are available still in the pharmacies and as there for long time, such as, amoxicillin, ampicillin, penicillin G, etc.

These days there are many antibiotics available, and in most of the countries, you can get them with only valid prescriptions. You can also buy antibiotics from authentic online stores. There are also topical antibiotics, such as ointments and creams, which you can buy over-the-counter.

What is antibiotic resistance?

When antibiotics are overused, resistance can start developing in your body about the antibiotics itself. This is a big concern these days. Overuse of antibiotics is a problem these days. In some regions of the world, you can see the overuse of antibiotics.

While receiving Noble Prize, Alexander Fleming said, “Then there is the danger that the ignorant man may easily underdose himself and by exposing his microbes to non-lethal quantities of the drug, make them resistant.”

The way antibiotics work:

Antibiotics work in two ways:

  • They kill the bacteria, for example, penicillin. They interfere with the bacterial cell wall formation or with the cell contents.
  • They stop the reproduction of bacteria.

What are the uses of bacteria?

For the treatment of infections occurred due to bacteria, the doctor will prescribe antibiotics. Antibiotics wouldn’t work for viral infections. So, it important to know whether you have a viral infection or bacterial infection.

Most of the viruses cause upper respiratory tract infections, such as flu, cold, and most of the coughs. There’s no use of prescribing antibiotics for those types of infections.

When someone overuse antibiotics, bacteria will become resistant. So, the effects of the antibiotic will decrease for those types of bacterium.

There are two types of bacteria, aerobic and anaerobic. Aerobic needs oxygen to survive and anaerobic does not.
